Ema Savahl Original Luminar 2.0 Collection Comes Alive During Miami Swim Week

By Hope Gainer

Ema Savahl, best known for her unique one-of-a-kind couture hand-painted garments, created a new ‘glow-in-the-dark’ collection called “Luminar 2.0.”  She showcased it on Monday night of Miami Swim Week in a nightclub setting/venue.  This collection is made with special glow-in-the-dark paint agents.  She came up with this idea of ‘glow-in-the-dark’ fashions because she was aware of how color therapy and light therapy elevate people’s moods.  She wanted to create a happy collection that elevates the human spirit.  The idea came to Ema while driving along the MacArthur Causeway in Miami which is lined up with cruise ships at the port of Miami.  At night the cruise terminals are lit up in bright Miami neon colors creating a sculpture-like effect on the skyline.

I thought I would love to create beautiful garments that look just as special as my Ema Savah pieces; artsy, unique and comfortable, but in the dark, they transform into another piece all together to bring joy and happiness to whomever sees or wears them.  It took me a whole year to manage the technicalities, but finally, I created garments that had never existed before,” remarked, Couture Designer, Ema Savahl.

The process to create these glow-in-the-dark pieces is complex. The special paint agent is like sand. The brightest colors are the green and the yellow, followed by aqua and lavender. Ironically, the red shines the least of all.  Ema Savahl worked hard to make the resin highly transparent like glass. The lighter sand was put inside the dark sand to create three dimensional shapes.   Ema wanted to include flowers as well and her botanical gardens signature looks, so she searched for pigment that glows in the dark to use for these embellishments. Her botanica designs were brush painted, and her 3-D resin was molded on the dresses.  When Ema combined these elements, the dresses had a different look altogether, as if they belonged to a different dimension.

“It’s amazing to see the joy this brings to people just by looking at these glow-in-the-dark garments or wearing them…it’s almost a childish joy of happiness,” shared Ema Savahl.
