Alexys Serrins – Boutique ART Representative

Alexys Serrins ART Dealer

In a gentle way, you can shake the world

Alexys, what does ART really mean to you and at what point in your life did you decide to become an ART advocate and representative?

This is a fascinating question to me. I believe there is an evolution in what art in fact means to me – and to most people. As we evolve and grow the understanding of our emotions, passions, and of course the way we appreciate art changes. I naturally became more involved as an advocate and/or representative of ART by growing and evolving with art and my appreciation and ability to adapt to change.

You currently represent and direct several artists, what aspects are essential for you to find in an artist before you decide to work with them?

As more of a ‘boutique’ art representative, I have the luxury of hand picking the artists that I truly want to work with. It is essential that I believe in the artist – not from monetary perspective, more so in their approach in how they develop and curate their works. I believe in the relationship between the artist and their art. These are the talents that I want to be working with and for.

What is the best way to describe your contribution to the ART scene in Miami?

I’m not sure I see myself as a ‘contributor’ to the art scene in Miami, but more part of the driving force behind the art scene in Miami. We are a collective group that believes in Miami and the tremendous artists that we produce here. I believe in growing the industry as a whole – building a bigger pie rather than focusing on my slice of it.

Being an ART Dealer has been mostly male dominant, are you currently doing something to change that?

Let’s be honest, Most industries are male driven and we can choose to position ourselves as part of the change or simply as equals. I tend to make more people aware of women not being front and center in the art world. Most women in the arts have been behind the scenes working under males. I mostly did, starting off and realized quickly I was very different and I could stand out to give advice, guidance and wisdom as I navigated through many years of hard work.

In 2020 Baltimore Museum of Arts only acquired works by female artists. If I could give advice to other women in the arts I would say to use your resources. For me, all I had in the beginning were my ideas, a laptop and google to use that time to research. I started using what I had and it grew into what I became today.

Could you tell us about a time you felt like giving up on your dreams and what did you do to overcome it?

As an entrepreneur, self doubt and self confidence are both prevalent and essential. If harnessed properly, they can serve as the ultimate motivator. This industry is not for the weak and I fully embrace all the challenges within.

What is the most challenging part of doing what you do?

The current economic climate is definitely challenging for both galleries and artists alike. As a more personalized art dealer, it’s become more challenging for me to do what I do best – connect artists and buyers in a holistic and symbiotic way.

Patience is a virtue and innovation is paramount. We always find ways to overcome these challenges. The highlight during Covid-19 was stepping out of my comfort zone and creating a digital future. Serrins Fine Art went virtual with Walters Cube offering online viewing rooms to feature artists in a new exciting way.

Many talented and entrepreneurial women out there would love to do what you do. Would you offer a perspective on how they can find their way through this path?
I’ve learnt that no two paths are the same. I think it’s vital that we know ourselves as best as possible before embarking on an entrepreneurial journey. You will keep running at the brick wall until you break through. Be persistent, be patient, but also know when to pounce on an opportunity – or someone else will. And never forget to enjoy the process and the journey.
